Spring comes slowly to the northern plains and prairies. The cold that claims the country is reluctant to release its grip, and a newborn calf is at the mercy of nature's caprice. The cowboy's role is a first responder when a blizzard blows in and new calves are on the ground. He is nursemaid and nanny to bovine babies that represent a rancher's only hope for hanging on for another year.
